Athenian Academy Charter School opened its doors in Clearwater Florida to students in Kindergarten to 5th grade in the year 2000. It was founded by George & Lemonia Poumakis who believed in immersing the Greek language into every day study’s of American education. This vision became a reality and was one of the first Greek Immersion Charter Schools in the nation and the first Greek Immersion Charter School in Florida. Many of the English words we use today stem from Greek and Latin roots. Teaching students the language and culture explicitly only expands their minds and enriches their education. We are partners with the Greek Embassy, who sends enthusiastic teachers from Greece to America to teach students about the language and culture.

As the school grew, so did George & Lemonia Poumakis’ vision. Athenian Academy welcomed teaching Spanish to students alongside the Greek language and standard Florida Curriculum. Additionally, Athenian Academy continued to build traction and grew to become a Pre-K-8 school by 2008.

Presently, Athenian Academy Charter School has a Preschool, VPK, K-8 , before and after school Care, after school athletics, and custom building that was designed just for our students.

George & Lemonia Poumakis vision has created an institution where students and families can be immersed in different cultures and inspire opportunity to expand their world view which in long term will enrich their education.
